The Hart County Humane Society was formed in 2006 in response to the tremendous amount of public outcry by the citizens of the City of Hartwell and Hart County. Due to the fact that Hart County has no animal shelter or animal control, roaming packs of dogs and feral cat colonies litter our landscape causing attacks on people and pets while unwanted litters of puppies and kittens are routinely deposited on back roads. One of the goals of the Hart County Humane Society is too draw attention to this problem and to seek a solution with our local government. We invite you to help us attain this goal by joining with us to make Hart County and Hartwell a more inviting and safe place to live.
Once our shelter is in place, we will become a support group to help the shelter with needed items that may or may not be in the budget. We will continue to raise funds in our community to help the shelter as needs arise. Our commitment is to keep our unwanted animals happy and healthy, and to find loving homes.
Who Are We?
The Hart County Humane Society is a non profit, all volunteer group changing the lives of companion animals in our community. We hold 501c3 status, and donations made are tax deductible. We rely solely on memberships and donations to fund our adoption/ foster, spay/ neuter, and family assistance programs.
We are a rescue group licensed with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, working through a network of approved foster homes. While we are dedicated to finding the best possible loving homes for those in our care we realize there are not enough homes for all the unwanted animals. We are not going to adopt out of this mess! Our hope is to reduce the over-population of unwanted pets while educating our community on the responsibilities of pet ownership. A large part of donations and fundraising efforts are ear marked for our spay/ neuter and family assistance program. Many families in our community can now keep their pets while we stop the unwanted litters. This is the only real solution. Please join with us.

Who We Are Not !
We are not a shelter. We are not a facility with a location or a paid staff. We are not animal control. We receive no funding from any government agencies or groups. We have no jurisdiction or authority to seize animals from private property or citizens, whether they are being neglected or abused, if they do not want to surrender their animals peacefully.
If you have an animal problem our suggestion is to call your local law enforcement. If you are in the city limits call Hartwell Police Department if you are in the county call the Hart County Sheriffs Department. If you need additional assistance call your county commissioner or city councilman. These numbers are on the back of this page. If you do not know what district you are in, call us and we will assist you.
